PVC and Its Applications

What is PVC?

PVC is the abbreviation of polyvinylchloride, a plastic. It is one of the most used compounds in the world with virtually uncountable applications. Plastic is a synthetic composite that has two major classes known as thermoplastic resins and thermosetting resins. Thermosetting resin is hardened by the application of heat. It does not become malleable after manufacture. Thermoplastic resins on the other hand can be softened into malleable forms such as PVC and polythene. Polyvinylchloride is also referred to as vinyl, which has become a blanket term for flexible plastic-based material used for different purposes such as flooring, creation of artificial leather and development of display banners.

How PVC is Made

PVC is created through a chemical process that involves linking of simple molecules known as monomers. This process, which is known as polymerization, ultimately creates a lengthy molecular chain that bonds different elements into the final polyvinylchloride. The first polymerization stage involves the combination of chlorine and ethylene to produce ethylene dichloride, which is further processed into the basic compound of PVC known as vinyl chloride. PVC is initially produced in a raw form which is powdery. This powder is then blended with other elements to produce the final product.

PVC material is very versatile and can be manufactured in various hues, flexibility and rigidity. It is used in different industries including building, automotive, electronic, textile and printing. Polyvinylchloride is a durable material which is not susceptible to corrosion. PVC products maintain their original form even with constant exposure to environmental elements such as direct sunlight, air and rain.

Application of PVC in Making Bumper Stickers

 

Bumper stickers made from ordinary paper degrade quickly due to oxidation. This is not the case with PVC stickers and related products. PVC stickers are generally waterproof with a firm surface that does not easily peel or tear. Polyvinylchloride material is also print compliant and sufficiently absorbs and retains printing toner for long periods of time. This versatility of PVC material enables manufacturers to create a wide variety of design formats. PVC bumper stickers may be embellished with a matte, gloss, gold leaf or plain paper finish. The best methods of printing PVC stickers include UV lithography, flexography, foil blocking offset printing and rotogravature.

-Chemical and oil resistance

 

PVC is resistant to many organic and inorganic substances. For this reason, it is used in exhaust ducts and medical appliances among other applications.
